Dear forum,
I have read some pipe descriptions on rusticated and sandblasted pipes claiming that the larger surface area, compared to a smooth finish, will cause the pipe to smoke cooler. Can anyone confirm this to be true or is it just a sales trick?
Personally I think the most important factor is the puff rate, but I would be happy to hear your experiences :puffpipe:
Cheers

Ya, Bulldog, that was a good thread.
I think you're right about the puff rate. But a smooth pipe is definitely hotter to the touch,

and the surface-area-as-radiator theory makes some sense too. For we old arthritics, the rough

surfaces are preferred because they're easier to handle more securely.
Mod Lawrence once posted an intriguing conjecture -- that vertical straight grain radiates heat

upward (through the wood?) more efficiently. Maybe he'll find this post and elaborate.
