I was listening to one of your old podcasts, regarding being one or the other. I personally have a fascination with trying and collecting many different pipes, keeping them clean after restoring and de-ghosting them. They are a sense of pride for me. I also have discovered, that as much as I have a love for my aromatics, I have recently found a new love for some english blends and flakes that ive let age. I also find that as far as far as the variety of tobaccos and pipes I buy and try out, they are about equal.
So im confused. In my general life, ive been labelled a few things, a punk, a metal head.....but im just me. I dont feel like I can be catagorized in my love for this hobby, and I encourage anyone to try and tell me im one or the other. I think this came to me yesterday when I sat down with some dunhill flake and a coffee. It was wonderful, equal to my 4noggins killington with irish cream. The flake in a Petersons shamrock, and the Killington in a Savinelli.

Do what you like; you've only yourself to please. I enjoy a smoke so I do and that's about it, but it is nice trying to find one that takes you by surprise wherever it may come from.

I'm the same way on all counts, music and pipe preferences...if I like it it's good to me. I can go from Black House to 1Q, no sweat.
It's really hard for me to focus on TAD when I love collecting and restoring pipes so much, but it's just the smart thing to do right now. Especially as a Canadian, focusing on TAD is crucial.

The idiots at work were making comments when I first started smoking a pipe again, calling me old man (I'm 33) and say "are you trying to be cool with a pipe grandpa?" I just tell I like good tobacco blends with good flavors. SMoking a pipe is cheaper than cigarettes or cigars. Some of the people I work with have the maturity of a 14 y.o boy. Glad I drive a fork truck so I don't have to work on the line with some of them..

Dunhill Flake is a wonderful smoke IMO. I had a mass produced cigarette the other day and the taste was really foul. Chemically and nasty. I can't believe I used to sample them all the time!
As for TAD vs PAD - I think I have a bad case of both :)

As they say - smoke what you like, like what you smoke. Try different things, and see where your tastes are. Our tastes do change as we explore more flavors and become more experienced.
I focus on acquiring tobacco, not pipes. I have a modest selection, and keep adding to it. Prices aren't going to go down.

Cavendish, I find your experiences with your fellow employees amusing because when I picked up the briar (21 years ago as a sophomore in college), I heard the same comments. 8-10 of my buddies and myself began smoking pipes, and we held group smokers in the dorm lounges(I attended Wake Forest University and due to the vast amount of money they received from RJR, Wake was one of the last campuses to succumb to the anti-smoking nazis). Many students referred to us as old men, the grandpas, oddballs, etc. We began like most, smoking aromatics like the Tinder Box blends North Sea (1Q) and Wilshire. None of us felt particularly inclined to join a frat, and we really became our own fraternity. While many made comments about our pipe smoking, our group (we referred to ourselves as "The Coaches") became a fixture around campus. Part of our group had formed a cover band, and were quite good. The Coaches became regulars at many of the frat parties, and we were always asked about our pipes, and on many a occasion, if a pipe was not lit, there inevitably came a request to light up! A few frats even organized their own cigar smokers. My point in all of this, is be genuine and true to yourself, do what you like with honor and integrity, and people will follow your lead.
