Comedian Dick Gregory Died at the age of 84

Civil rights activist, writer and comedian Dick Gregory died Saturday at the age of 84. His son, Christian, took to Instagram to reveal the sad news. A cause of death was not immediately given, though the family promised to give more details in the coming days

Dick Gregory was a brilliant activist and comedian, using comedy to make difficult issues human and humane across divides. He could always surprise and break through to audiences, and his wry and adept wit always made him a class act. He was a brave guy, a good soul.

When I was in school in Michigan, I read Ni---r by Dick Gregory, his auto biography when it came out in 1964. My school was totally integrated, so carrying this around was a bit of a risk, but no one ever gave me grief about it. I also liked reading James Baldwin's books. I could never understand people's racism then, and it grieves me that it's still around today. RIP Mr. Gregory.
