I currently have a rather large cellar and have perhaps 30 mason jars and 30 tins. I currently store my cellar in a large cabinet in my unheated garage as that is where I normally smoke. I live in Pennsylvania so winter here can get very very cold. Will it hurt to keep the tobacco in the unheated garage over the winter? Thoughts?

As with wine and cigars, I'd think it better to store tobacco in a more regulated environment without drastic swings in temperature. A room temp, dark closet in the house would be much preferred, IMO. However, from what i've read, heat is more of an issue than cold with respect to negative effects on aging.

I don't think that there has been enough studies on temperatures of cellars to conclude with any certainty whether the temperature that the tobacco is stored in has any effect on the tobaccos. But... let us know if there is any ill affect on your stash, so that we can better developed best practices on this.
We'd need to know what temperatures run the garage. If it is like mine which gets some air conditioning and heating it should handle it just fine. The temps run between 50 degrees and 90 degrees.
I would THINK the temperature fluctuations would cause condensation, which will damage your tobacco.
Your biggest concerns, I would think, would be the temperature fluctuations causing expansion and contraction with the containers. This could corrupt the seal.
Inside a garage, in a cabinet or tote, the temperature swings should well muted and gradual.
Still, we’ll need to see a temperature graph in one minute intervals over the past dozen years or so. Also, strain gauge readings from sample jars over a one year period will be needed.
And don’t give us this crap about “it all seems ok and aging deliciously”. Enjoyment is subjective. Don’t trust it. Numbers don’t lie.
