Coal Miner Loves His Som

Hurry’s after his shift, no shower so son can see his favorite basketball game. Looks tired, but is a great Dad.

I saw a short TV feature on this. The dad's specialty in the coal mine is bolting the ceiling supports in the tunnels. He came unshowered and in his work clothes because he left work late and didn't want to disappoint his kid. I think the Kentucky coach spotted them and gave them a special shout-out. I think all those stripes on his work clothes are safety colors so he could be spotted in the dark if the lights went out and people were looking with only head lamps.

The most hazardous occupations statistically are mining, fishing, and farming.

I hope this youngster get's a framed copy of this photo when he's old enough to understand its importance.

Yes, John Calipari who I’m not a fan of because I used to be a Celtics fan actually hooking them up with VIP tickets and in the box or something like that. I believe Calipari said his family were coal miners from way back to so even more special to him.

The basketball team played their annual Blue/White scrimmage game in Pikeville this year. It was played there instead of Rupp as a goodwill gesture to fans in Eastern Ky because of the flooding a couple months ago.
Basketball is special to folks in the mountains (and just about all of us in Kentucky), and events like this are huge for morale.
