The first job 60 + years ago was in clothing sales where I was expected to wear fashionable color matched menswear. Styles have made a radicle change over the years but I miss hats, vests and fine wool. I don’t frequent five star places but refuse to look like Santa and don shorts with flip flops in my northern US area. I should be happy the wife has to dragged into a store to replace well worn items. Am I a rare bird or are others still out there?

To me, it's a balancing act. I look and feel better, and get treated better, when I dress up just a little, like instead of wearing a fleece and jeans, I can wear slacks, an open button-up shirt with a collar, and a sports jacket. Mostly, people rarely wear a jacket and tie to church these days, unless it is a wedding or funeral, so fully dressing up is awkward if you're going to the hardware store or grocery. Besides which, if I get home and have to do chores, I don't necessarily want to have to change clothes.

I think people have to be careful when they retire. There is a pleasurable period when it is delicious to get up and put on a sweatshirt and sweat pants Monday morning and every day for the next three weeks. But after a while, you might want to re-join the world, and dress at least casual business most days.

Some people never want to dress up, ever, at all, and that is their decision. For my morale, I find I'm happier if I dress up a notch or two, usually, when I leave the house. On the other hand, knotting on a tie, which used to be daily apparel for me, is a decision. Do I really want to do this? Why? If i dress up, it is usually for my wife, even if we are just having supper at home.

When I need/want to dress up, I do it right. Otherwise, I dress down. I wear flip flops during the summer b/c I cannot stand wearing socks. My feet get too hot otherwise.

Leather outback hat, a button up collared shirt over a tshirt, jeans, and Wellingtons are me most of the time.

Used to actually ready "Gentleman's Quarterly". Follow all the proper dressing etiquette.

Then came to NC over 40 years ago. You know how hot it is in full sleeve and pants? It's shorts and t-shirt year around. I don't do flipflops since that hurts my big toe. And I still believe you have to run faster than the next guy in case of bear or thing.

At work it's " business casual " polo with slacks. Once home and not going anywhere its gym shorts and a t-shirt.
For Mass its dress pants, linen colared shirt and Orvis straw Panama hat or wool flat cap in winter.

I only break out a tie when formal functions require.

The only time bad stuff happens to my vehicles, is when I'm in my nice pants 😂
Sounds familiar. Every time I’d have on a new shirt or tie I’d invariably find some uncured sealant in the (airplane) shop. There’s nothing on the planet that gets that out of clothes.

Eventually I just quit wearing ties and nice shirts at work.

I really don’t like wearing shorts, but in the summer in Texas I do wear them around the house or playing golf. If we go to a restaurant, I will put on slacks.

My job requires me to wear a suit and tie at times and I’m shocked at how many comments I get. I’m also amazed how many guys can’t wear even a sport coat without looking dreadfully uncomfortable. Once I was at the office wearing nice jeans and a well fitting colored t-shirt (no logos and a heavy non-athletic looking fabric) and dress shoes that would be appropriate with slacks or a suit. Unexpectedly I was asked to attend a meeting with the Governor and his Chief Legal Counsel so I grabbed a blazer from my office and went to the Capitol. My colleagues all commented that it was a good thing I was dressed up. Uh, not really, but thanks!

I think it’s a matter of feeling confident in wearing clothes you feel comfortable with more than what you are actually wearing. It’s amazing what a nice pair of shoes and a jacket can do!

While I wouldn’t love wearing a suit every day it is nice to have a couple well tailored suits in your wardrobe or at least a coat and tie handy. Not just for marrying and burying anymore, lol.

I just shake my head when I see people at my workplace (government office) in hoodies, pajama bottoms, flip flops, or worse yet, crocs. 🤦‍♂️

Several years ago I worked with a very dapper older gentleman who always looked like he was just at a country club or golf course happy hour. Only guy who got by walking around the office all day with an unlit cigar in his mouth. Even folks who didn’t know him still remember the well dressed man with the cigar all these years later, lol. He made an impression, that’s for sure.

Way I see it, if British army allows shorts and kilts, everyone should go around in shorts and kilts. Those breast armor worn by House Calvary is neat too. And helmet..
