I recall reading on a forum that had a limited run of clear metal stems which were discontinued because of some sort of flaw in the material, I suppose that's no surprise given the experimentational nature. Has anyone here owned or seen one?

They really do make transparent aluminum tubes that are stronger then glass but I believe only the Military can afford them

I dont find it likely that we will see them again any time soon. Transparent Aluminum, is possible, but very difficult to and expensive to produce.

That's a shame. I suppose it's as unlikely to find a Glasswing Butterfly (Greta oto) in Central Park as it to find one of these stems.

Technically it would be "the cross.". The crucifix is merely a representation of Jesus on the cross. And if you were to make a pipe out of a crucifix, you might get the collywobbles or something worse
