Clay Pipe from antique shop

I bought them for just £5 each. I felt like I was stealing! hahaha

I guess that was a pretty good deal then. Last time I looked at clay pipes they were selling for around $10 each on this side of the pond.

@pappymac I take it they mean the American Civil War; the English Civil War was in the 1640s and there have been clay pipes for decades / centuries after that!

Yes. The American Civil War (also known as The War Between the States).

It really didn't surprise me to hear the antique shop owner say something like that by the way.
There is a brick & mortar cigar and pipe shop about 30 miles from me that only carries renamed bulk pipe tobacco. They have told pipe smokers that they don't sell tinned tobacco because no one smoke tinned pipe tobacco anymore.

I hate to think about what you paid for the clay pipes in an antique shop.
I see them occasionally when I take the wife browsing around antique shops and malls and they are usually priced over $40 each. I asked one shop why they were priced so old and was told, "They are antiques because they are made from clay and no one has made clay pipes since after the Civil War."

That antique store clerk was either very misinformed or outright lying, clay pipes have been in pretty much constant production for 5 centuries and are still in production today.

@RustiePyles CPG A big shame Wilson's of Sharrow (just up the road from me in Sheffield) stopped making clay pipes about 10 years ago. If they still made them I'd probably be their biggest customer

I bought my first clay pipe from an antique shop about 25 years ago. It had a paper label around the stem, and I wasn't entirely sure that it wasn't purely decorative until I took it back to my dorm room! Fortunately, it is a functional pipe, and I've smoked it a bunch, although a mishap turned it into a dudeen a few years ago.

I've seen antique stores pull that kind of stuff with snuff stuff. Seen some of the most common models of snuff boxes listed as rare antiques. The kind you will find a better specimen if you want to.
