Standard wooden case for a clay pipe. Sometimes they show up as Japanned tin cases in a similar configuration featuring the name of a pub or tobacconist. I have a couple that were hand made in box wood circa 1860/70 that hold a meerschaum 'cutty' pipe which I will happily post pictures if it will add anything to the OP.
