Yes. The bowls are thicker and heavier than the regular clay pipes and with the reed stem they are much less likely to break. I haven't had to clean mine yet, but I think they must be easier as you can remove the bowl. Also the wood stem feels better to my mouth than the unglazed clay.
Penn Valley Pipes was out of stems when I ordered mine, but Ken was very kind to send one as soon as they became available.

Yeah they're great little pipes, I have 3 I smoke on occasion. You need to build up a bit of cake in them before they smoke decent though. I have a few I've been meaning to put up for sale, shoot me a pm if you'd like.

I have one that I bought on ebay and cleaned up. This was an antique pipe (maybe +60 yrs) - smelled of PA and had quit a bit cake in it. I was able to fake out most of the cake carefully with my finger nail. It was without a stem so I made one myself from a thin reed/bamboo. The draw is not as open as most of my pipes. I don't smoke it often; I think a drier tobacco would work best in it though. Does anyone have a suggestion of the best tobacco to smoke in it?

i used tio find these from time to time near an old pottery outside of Akron, OH in my younger years. They probably date from the late 1800's-early 1900's. They smoke alright, I guess. Smoked all types of clay and stone (micmac) pipes, and don't really like 'em. It's hard to beat briar or meerschaum for taste.

I smoke shag cuts almost exclusively in mine. 5 Brothers, G&H Dark Birdseye, G&H Kendal #7 .

Other blends might smoke fine, but these pipes are perfect for a short strong smoke and the shag cut burns really well in one.

Also should add, I believe all 3 pipes pictured were made by the Pamplin Smoking Pipe Manufacturing Company which was in business from 1878 to 1951.

Just to let ya all know, I dropped my Pamplin clay from about three feet

and it hit the tile floor...not a chip/scratch of crack on it...tough lil

pipes...so don't let this clay pipe fool u with it being super fragile...but don't go

dropping them just for fun now ;-)
Btw; it has become my everyday morning smoker now...
