To elaborate on what at first may seem to be a smartass reply earlier…. many of us regard a quality smoke as being where the pipe smokes almost passively, without having to puff…. just allowing the smoke to move freely through the pipe.

A cigarette filter requires the smoker to pull harder with puffs to pass smoke, stifling the flow of smoke, making the quality of the smoking experience decline by some smokers standards.

But, if for whatever reason, a harder puffing, hotter burning pipe means a positive trade off for whatever reason for you, then by all means….

Hi guys. Can you use cigarette filters in a pipe??
Folks who want to use filters buy pipes that are made for filters and use filters that are made for pipes. The Germans seem to prefer filters. There are a number of filter systems, many of which are proprietary and made to fit their manufacturers' pipes. So, there are 9mm filters (charcoal or otherwise), which are the closest thing to a non-proprietary pipe standard, 6mm Savinelli balsa filters, Brigham rock maple filters (kinda), Dr. Grabow's cardboard filters, etc.

I always have a hard time thinking of the balsa or rockmaple inserts as “filters.” Gimmicky, but they don’t restrict the flow or draft like a filter.

You could, but the main problem is that air takes the path of least resistance. Filter pipes are bored for 9mm, and most cellulose cigarette filters are about 8mm in diameter, so the fit will be pretty loose. That leads to most of the smoke going around the cellulose filter rather than through it, so you’re just restricting your draw for little benefit.

In addition to that, pipe tobacco tends to both be moister than cigarette tobacco and smoked in larger quantities, so even if you managed a good initial fit, a cellulose filter would likely be soaked and collapse before the end of the bowl, bringing you right back to the loose fit issue.

Pipe filters are made to survive whole bowls and can absorb significantly more moisture before their performance degrades, so I’d just save the cigarette filters for rollies if I were you.
