I opened a new tin of 7ish year old Virgina last (Dunhill 3 year matured Virginia) night and smoked two bowls. The first 15-20 minutes were fine but then it started to become bitter and taste like cigarette ash, the taste of which lingered in my mouth until this morning. mind, I did not eat much of anything the last two days.

I tried it again this morning in a different pipe, (with a couple of mugs of black coffee.) This time being more careful to let it sit and breathe a few minutes before packing and lighting one then twice and smoking slowly. The coffee certainly helped and was a nice contrast but again... first 20 minutes were tolerable and then, cigarette ash. Ughh. completely disgusting and my mouth felt like a tasteless raisin.

Maybe it just didn't agree with me? thoughts anyone?

The citrus is light on it but I was curious if you had at least tasted it or not. My experience is it’s a very light/ medium flavored blend and very monochromatic. I just finished a tin the other day so it’s fresh in my mind.

Sometimes I get an ashy taste mid way or at the end of a bowl of a Va blend or a Burley blend. I have no idea why but I've heard others say the same thing. Luckily it doesn't happen often but can last a couple days for me.
When it does happen, I just smoke Latakia blends for a couple days. Lat blends never taste ashy too me.

I personally don't mind that taste myself but I can see why others might not enjoy that. But I've smoked cigars and pipes and I grew up with smokers during the 70s at a time when no one stopped smoking around anyone even children pregnant women and infants. I remember burnt melamine ashtrays filled sky high with cig butts matches and ash. Which of course was my chore to empty and to run to the Cumbie to get a carton of marlboros and whatever else was needed. The laws were very different. It was a diff time. But the smell of that is nostalgic for me.
