Ok I am new here and have a question for you all. Sorry, I get long winded at times. Only been smoking a pipe for a week and jumped in with both feet, my grandkids Christmas money, and most of all, my wife's blessing.

At this moment I have 1 Briarwood pipe but ordered 8 more pipes and all will be here by Friday. Now I am in love with smoking the pipe already. Yesterday morning I got toung bit. Over zealous in smoking it I think. Now I am a coffin nail smoker and trying to use the pipe to end that nasty habbit and I feel like a pipe can do that for me but I will have a pipe hanging out of my mouth all day. I am good with that, I am retired so I can do this hehe.

Will a Churchwarden pipe with a 12 inch stem help me from my over zealous smoking and possible toung bite? I ordered a few of them. Both briar wood pipes.

I did read here about toung bite and the causes. Bowl not packed right, to moist, to big of a puff, etc. Wondering if the 12 inch stem will help me there.

I have 3 tobbaco blends right now. Borkum Riff and Captain Black. Both are cherry Cavendish. My 3rd one is from Bennington Tobacconist No. 81, Prelude blend. I really love this one. Smooth with a slight hint of cherry.

My goal is to have a weekly rotation of pipes and use a pipe all day clean and rack it at night and the next day use the next pipe on the rack.

Thank you all for the warm welcome.
Tom

I haven't had any experience with long churchwardens but I’ve read many here comment that the stem length doesn't quite cool down a smoke in and of itself. I think how a long stem could help is that if you’re drawing at the same rate as you would with a shorter stem, it would take longer to reach your mouth and so theoretically cool off by the time it arrives.

I'd imagine though that the extra time it takes wouldn't have a huge effect. You might also just end up drawing harder to get the smoke to arrive to your mouth at the same time which would negate the theoretical benefits.

I haven't found any solution to tongue bite other than slowing down. Regardless of how I pack or how wet/dry the tobacco is, if I’m puffing hard and/or carelessly (which leads to puffing hard) then I know what I’m going to get. Sometimes I notice and slow down and other times I just say "screw it" and deal with the tongue bite then always regret it later.

No. The cooling due to the long stem is not a myth, but it's also not enough to avoid tongue burn. Churchwardens are my favourite pipes, but I scalded my tongue with them regularly when I was learning the ropes. Once you get the technique and the muscle memory right, tongue burn becomes a non-issue. Tongue bite, on the other hand, will remain an issue based on types of tobacco and the individual's body chemistry.

The only way to slow tongue is to not pack you pipe so tight and for gosh sakes slow down the cadence of your puffing. Occasionally relighting a pipe after it has gone out is no crime.

Temperature tongue bite and chemical tongue bite are different. I love churchwardens as well, and if I could suggest, maybe try churchwardens that accept 9mm filters.

Vauen and Stanwell both make pipes capable of accepting 9mm filters. There are Vauen Lord of the Rings themed churchwardens that you may like as well as traditional. Stanwell pipes can come with a Churchwarden stem so you can actually have both styles (normal stem and churchwarden stem).

The charcoal 9mm filter can cool the smoke and filter out some of the excess moisture and other impurities.

Cadence, packing technique, and tobacco type will all play a part as as suggested by others.

Thank you guys for the input. The other day I had 2 churchwarden pipes delivered. I did the three step pack, and did the sip/mouthwash method as a video link on a you tube channel suggested. What a difference in smoking with a churchwarden pipe. In love with them now. Packing my bowl better, taking slower draws as well as smaller draws. Issue solved. I was always trying to not let my pipe go out and that was a huge issue. Goes out, just light it again. Much more enjoyable.

Thanks again everyone.
Wish you all a Very Merry Christmas, Happy holidays and New Years.

I've been in love with churchwardens since I discovered how great they are for reading... The pipe can sort of rest in your hand off to one side, and you take a sip when you feel like it. Nothing gets in the way of your book. After discovering this, I learned that the German name for churchwarden is "lesepfeife" meaning "reading pipe." :)
