I found a pretty sweet Poker style pipe a guy is selling from Facebook, it is cherry wood though so I am rather skeptical since I haven't heard many speak of cherry wood being any good for pipes? Some insight from the pros would be awesome...
- Is it a good pipe material?

- Do they smoke ok?

- Do they burnout at a different rate?

- What are your suggestions?

I've got 3 Ropp cherry woods and they all are great smokers.Smoke slow and they will delver. As long as you don't smoke them on fire you should be ok.

My great grandfather preferred cherry for his pipes. The story I have got was that his father had cut down a few cherry trees to make the kitchen table and a few spoons and such. And, he saved a bunch of it to make his pipes. Cleaning and reaming pipes wasn't a thing back in those days, so he would whittle a new pipe and throw the old one into the fireplace.

As far as how they compare to briar, I have no idea, but I have been thinking about making one, when ever I get any spare time, lol.

My second pipe was a cherry wood -and like rose wood- it smokes a bit hot compared to briar. They are inexpensive and smoke fine otherwise. That being said, I wouldn't buy another one again. If I want an inexpensive pipe I reach for a MM cob.

Cherrywood and Olivewood are some of the inexpensive alternatives to briar. My first pipe was a cherrywood billiard and it's still one of my favorite smokes 4 years later. It all depends on how well you take care of them. If it's not gonna break your pockets though, I'd say don't knock it till you try it. You can always get one of the less costly brands of briar pipes if you're not comfortable with taking a chance on cherry or olive. There's briar for every budget.

I have a briar and a corncob already but really liked the design of the cherry wood that this guy is selling but had a few questions before I pulled the trigger, thanks for your guys' input.

are you talking about cherrywood as the material or cherrywood as the shape? I only ask because you said "poker style" and it made me think that you meant cherrywood shape. Basically, a bent poker.

I've got an old cherry wood Ropp (that's probably thirty years old at least) that I smoke regularly. For some reason I chose to reserve it for aromatic blends. I can report that it never gets hot and delivers a nice cool, sweet smoke. I'd say that if you buy a new one, treat it carefully for awhile.

It is a poker made from cherry wood, he wants 65 bucks for it, not sure if I like the stem though now that I've looked it over a few times so I may have changed my mind if I could figure out how to post a pic I would

Right click the pic and select "copy image url." Then here, click "IMG" and paste should work. I searched for the FB page but couldn't find it

It worries me that he's selling an olive wood pipe with a giant split and calling it a "cosmetic flaw". I would think a reputable maker would just trash the pipe. It just doesn't bode well.

if its a really bad split then yea it needs pitched but sometimes its just the outer bit that has creaked but no visible sign in the bowl. I wouldnt charge a full price on it thou.

This is my cherry tree yesterday. Shame to cut them down, even to make a pipe. I had a cherry pipe years ago. It smoked ok if you couldn't afford a briar, but wasn't as good at all.

My opinion is that for 65 bucks you could play it safe and get a decent briar. I recommend the Savinelli Grezze line, a "natural" or unfinished briar. They're cheap, and although you get some pits and fills they're perfectly engineered and smoke wonderfully.
