OK, I know it is inappropriate to suggest ways to spend less money on smoking a pipe. But, I now use a way cheaper than matches. First I use a match or lighter to light a candle, then light the pipe. Then each time I need to light again, I re-light the match from the candle. I get several lights per match. Then, since I am smoking in the woodshop, I just grab a splinter of wood from the floor instead of a match.

Well, that certainly sounds cheaper than my current method; lighting hundred dollar bills and then lighting from there.
I mean, folks away say there's no shame in the relight...but it ain't free!

Winton, I think it's great to suggest new ways to smoke pipes more cheaply. Part of the reasons, I like smoking a pipe is for a fraction of the cost of cigarettes/cigars. I can smoke the best available for about the same price as one carton of Marlboros etc.

I don't want to nanny, Winton, but an open flame in a woodshop is a recipe for disaster that your insurance probably won't cover. Sawdust-laden air can and will flash with an effect similar to gasoline; I've seen it, I'm not repeating something I've heard--not to mention the other hazards like petrochemicals etc. I'd advise anyone against it.

Nothing against being a cheapskate and recycling, though, I wholeheartedly endorse that!

I buy 600 matches for 1 USD. . . teh candle method would work out to be no cheaper I'm nearly certain, and otherwise just sounds too bothersome for my tastes.
Still, if you have fun with it (or even save a few cents here and there) more power to you mate, glad you found something you enjoy.

I received my first pipe as a gift from a friend who wanted to dabble in pipes and needed a partner in crime. Without knowing scratch about packing, lighting, etc. I enjoyed the heck out of it early on, but now can see my ignorace and lighting it with a Bic cigarette lighter caused some burn in the edge of the bowl
By holding the lighter in my right hand in the forward part of the bowl I no longer have a "perfect" circle around the top of the bowl. There's a little spot in the edge at about 2:00 where aggressive use of the Bic caused a bit of a burnout on the edge.
It really bothered me once I started learning and appreciating some of the intricacies, however now I look at it fondly and reflect on things I've learned thus far, one of which is to use matches.
Thanks.

I use small wooden matches, and get 10 boxes of them (32 per box) for about 60 cents at the grocery store. Cheap enough for me. I just like the feel and sound of striking the match on the side of the box, part of my pipe ritual.

That's pretty good. Another way I save, is I take a small pair of wire cutters, and clip the ends off of my pipe cleaners once they have been used.

That way they last twice as long

Iknow the dangers of flame in the shop. No real chemicals in there. If I am sanding, I am using a breathmask, which means I can't smoke. I either smoke or work in there, not both. But the detached garage/shop is the only place outside of the house I can get warm enough to enjoy the pipe. Close to zero outside now.
Mostly I wanted to get a reaction from y'all on the cheapness.

If you want to go REAL cheap do what I do at demos where I set up to blacksmith. Use flint and steel.

I get sooooo many matches from my travels. I have a huge bowl full of them. Funny though, I still use my zippo.....
