Once it gets nasty. The amount of smokes depends on the type of filter. Just check it after a few smokes I don't use one as it restricts the draw a bit, and can sometimes remove flavor.

The box of filters would have you change them every time you smoke a pipe. I think that's overdoing it. I think three or

four smokes per filter is probably fine. You can get away with a number more, but it won't improve the flavor even if

you stick to the same tobacco. But if you are stuck with a pipe on a trip, and no extra filters, I don't think a dozen or

even twenty smokes would be a problem, and if it gets to funky, just smoke the pipe filterless, and adjust to a more

sipping instead of puffing mode, unless you tend to sip lightly anyway. I think changing filter every smoke would be

a waste of energy and pocket change.

I forgot I had a filter in a Sav I smoked 4-5 times, then wondered why a pipe cleaner wouldn't run down the stem, afetr it coooled, pulled it apart & the crap that was on the balsa made me rethink about using them again, didn't really want to even grab it. Better there than in me.

I doubt I'll ever be an exclusively filter pipe smoker, but there is certainly a case to be made. Apparently

a majority or large plurality of European pipe smokers use filters, and whole lines of pipes come with them.

Do you end up smoking more, or harder? Don't know. Filters have their uses, I find after finally buying my

first filter pipe. They provide a good option for stronger tobaccos, when you aren't up for the "wall of flavor,"

though for me that's not often.

lono, on the rare occasion that i use a filter I cut them in either 1/2 or 1/3's they don't restrict as much and can be tossed after a smoke or 2.
