Autumn in the rolling hills of NY only lasts a short time but the return of crisp air, surrounded by the red and orange colors of leaves falling from the trees, produce on stands in front of the farms, fresh apple cider and winery’s around the finger lakes helps prepare for Winter storms, time to stack the apple wood for the fireplace. Most of all the damn bugs are dead!

One of the benefits of cooler weather, end of the bugs. In the mountains of North Georgia as soon as it hit 31f, hopefully this Wednesday evening, flies and ladybugs disappear. And I already have the oak and hickory seasoned and stacked. Most around here save the apple wood for the bbq smoker.

Any photos? I really miss autumn in a hardwood forest. Here in the PNW the evergreens will get greener if the rains ever come and wash the dust off. Luckily I've got some big leaf maples off my deck, so I'll get some autumn color, but not yet.

Autumn is also when I reach for the latakia blends; they remind me of the burning piles of oak leaves (back when you could do that). I also tend to start reaching for Scotch instead of Bourbon, especially when the rains come...

Just relocated from the high Colorado mtns to the Southeast. Hard to get accustom to no snow on the mountains, not even snow on the hills. Warm mornings, tobacco getting rehydrated just sitting out, leaves still on the trees. I must admit, nice not to have to think about plowing snow or breaking ice in the water troughs.
Glad the move went well! You'll probably be the guy wearing a western shirt when all the locals are wearing winter jackets, can't imagine it gets anywhere near as cold there.

Had our first freeze of the year last night. Dropped to 27 overnight and only up to 46 today. Tonight is supposed to be down to 17 and tomorrow's high is 43. I suppose my days of picking the ripe tomatoes off of the vine are over now. Such a shame also, we had to replant our garden after 3 hail storms knocked it completely out. Just started getting ripe veggies about a month ago and now any further ripening will be done in the kitchen window. That being said, a break from the flying wildlife is much appreciated.

The real question that remains is: What is your preferred fall smoking blend? English, DFK, Aromatic? I'm primarily a virginia smoker, but as the weather turns colder I like to mix in a few english and dfk dominate bowls during the week.

Definitely prefer different blends for Fall cooler weather than for Summer. For me, Summer means more Virginias and VaPers; Fall means more English/Scottish blends. Dark Fired Kentucky too, but I also enjoy that a lot even on the hottest Summer evening so can't say I necessarily smore more of it this time of year (like it all year 'round!).
