any of the frog morton series are great because they are not too overwhelming, I also enjoy Old dog and squadron leader. There are literally hundreds of great English blends out there so just find what you like and sample as many as you can and you will find out which ones your pallet likes the most! Happy hunting

It would really help us if you named a few blends you have tried and liked, or hated. A good English can mean many different things to many different people.

Good English & Balkan blends...I might be typing the list for a few days ;-) ok-ok, I will list a few/maybe more to get you started in the right direction;
1. Dunhill's EMP (lighter English, but does have a good Nic kick, or at least as 1st smoke with empty stomach ;-)

2. C&D's Morning Drive

3. Dunhill's Nightcap

4. MC's Froggies

5. Low Country Tobacco Cooper

6. C&D's Bow-Legged Bear

7. C&D's Billy Budd

8. C&D's SOTE

9. Penzance

10. Boswell's Northwoods

11. H&H's Blackhouse

12. H&D's Mag Opus

13. LJ Peretti's Royal & Omega blends

14. NYPC's Jack's Shanty

15. SPC's Plum Pudding
that should get you rolling for awhile...all great ones IMHO, and are always in my rotations :puffy:

Dragon: That is English Blends 101. A wonderful starter list, even for a codger like me to review and try something new.

Here are some of my favorites: GLP Westminster, Abingdon, Charing Cross, and Dunhill's London Mixture and Nightcap. And C&D's Star of the East. Can't go wrong with those.

@tennsmoker~Thanks brother...I had been smoking cigars for almost 20 years before the "Crossing over" glad I did, but wish I had done it much sooner ;-) there is no equal to pipe bacci and the Brotherhood of Briar
So those base English blends I have found really hit the spot for me, still so many others to still try out there...just kick'in back and enjoying the great ride :puffy:

Dunhill Mixture 965. Also, if you don't mind buying over the phone, I have recently discovered

Nat Sherman's Exclusive 536; give Nat Sherman (NYC tobacconist) a call, 1-800-mycigar. I only

recommend this extra trouble because this is a flavorful, mild English blend, the perfect introduction

to English blends. But 965 will also do the job. Nightcap is great but quite a nicotine kick, and

not where I'd start with English blends.

I am glad you started the thread, I am new to this page and English blend and I was looking for some to try myself.

Thanks Dragon for a nice list I took a screenshot and will by adding to my "to try list".

I will add that the first English I tried was EMP and I think it's a perfect starting point.

As you can see, lots of guys like the Frogs. I do not, but go for it; you might.
I am personally fond of Peterson's Old Dublin, and a couple of blends from McCranie's: Highland and Murdock's Pipe. You can only buy those from them; the former is bulk only, the latter, tin only.
Sam Gawith Balkan Flake is quite a nice smoke; I like it better than their Squadron Leader, personally, although SL is still tasty.

H&H Larry's Blend is also one of my regulars.

Finally, I will mention MacBaren HH Vintage Syrian; it is very different from the others, but a great smoke.

The only other English I might offer is that Boswell's has its "Mild English," that is quite good, but a little on the lite side. I like it just for the car and driving around town.

Second on Westminster, it's in my opinion and limited experience the best "straightforward" English blend. Complex but not distracting, full of flavor but lacking the odd notes that can make other smokes bothersome to some. I could describe 965 similarly.

One of my faves that doesn't get much attention is H&H Ambassador's blend. If you want to try something more in the Balkan category you should try H&H Mt. Marcy or Sunjammer (a little lighter than Mt. Marcy).
