I'm not familiar with theirs, but many do not like the coatings that may be found within new pipes and remove it with anything from a wet paper towel to a light sanding from sandpaper wrapped around a dowel or similar.

I removed mine from a new Peterson recently. Didn't want to take the risk of off-flavors.

It could be as simple as a black stain of alcohol based dye to cover a flaw in the wood. You might give it the "honey treatment". Wipe one drop of honey all over the inside of the bowl, let it dry and then smoke. Honey is almost pure carbon and will start building a protective cake. Any taste should disappear after a few smokes. puffy
