Another baccy with Captain in the name. This is another aromatic. Again, I'm not big on aros. I try the occasional new aro in hopes of finding one I really like. It is made by McClelland. This one didn't win me over. The Tin description says:
This is a cool-smoking mild pipe tobacco that will not bite the tongue. Lightly fragrant with a hint of vanilla and a touch of mint. Always appealing.
According to luxurytobaccoreviews.com, it is made up of Burley, Cavendish, and Black Cavendish. It is ribbon cut, with much of the Cavendish in rather large pieces. Upon opening the tin I get a strong vanilla smell. But not just plain vanilla, it has some depth to it, an almost vanilla custard smell. There is also a slight chocolate scent, with a bit of an underlying sweetness, but no mint. I just had my third bowl, and smoked it in my newly restored Kaywoodie Billiard. The first two were in MM Ponys. At the start, everything was peachy. It took to the charring and true light wonderfully. The tin description was accurate, the flavor was very mild, but not absent. I got a nice vanilla flavor with a tiny hint of chocolate. It was rather sweet, but not like candy. Which again reminded me of a vanilla custard, but one on the sweeter side. No mint though. The smoke itself was very cool, which could have been from the mint. It may have lent more of a mint feeling then a mint flavor, if that makes sense. Things stayed this way till about halfway through the bowl, I tamped down the ash. Then after a few minutes almost all traces of flavor were gone. It was still smoking fine, but was almost completely flavorless. A few more minutes go by, and it started to get a bit hot and wet. I smoked it that way for a bit and then dumped it. All that was left was what I would call a medium sized pinch of dottle, and some moisture. The tobacco that had burnt, was completely ash, and had burned well. I had let the baccy dry a good amount of time, and it felt dry enough when I loaded up my pipe. If I hadn't tamped, maybe it wouldn't have happened, but I'm not sure. All in all, it's an ok smoke. I would suggest it to aromatic lovers, but not to someone who doesn't smoke aros often.
