Came across a basket pipe marked "Captain Black" "Made in England" at the local shop today. It's a long shanked blasted Canadian for $29. First problem is the draw is almost nonexistent. Tomorrow I'll fix that issue but otherwise it looks pretty sweet. I'll get some pics up tomorrow as well.

Anyone come across these pipes?

I have one in my collection, an estate pipe I got off the 'bay. To be honest, it's quite homely. It's a small, bent apple. Smokes okay though, no issues with the draw...

The shop owner was first surprised the pipe was in the basket as he thought they were all Capri pipes. He said that Captain Black's pipes were better then their tobacco. Lol I tried a pipe cleaner at first with no luck, then a piece of rigid wire and it seems the whatever they treated the inside of the bowl with May have seeped into the draw hole. The blockage is right at the airway opening. Tomorrow at work I will ream the hole with a long shank bit as it's at least a 6" long shank on the pipe.

Blue:
I've passed on several nice looking Capt. Black estate pipes before. It was probably a mistake because, according to Pipedia, they were originally made by Orlik as a second and are now made by Cadogan.
Please let us know how you progress with your retro fit activities.

Here are a few pics. Just finished reaming out the air hole and as I suspected, whatever they coat the inside of the bowl with clogged up the air hole. Good draw through it now.

Back in the 70's and 80's (maybe even into the 90's), you could order a Captain Black pipe with a coupon found inside their tobacco pouches. The pipes were made by Orlik and usually had fills and rather thick, cheap vulcanite bits but smoked very well. Back in the 80's I had a Canadian shaped Captain Black for a lot of years that I smoked often until I got into purchasing better quality hand made pipes. I don't even remember what I did with that pipe but even today I'd still be smoking it if the stem was more comfortable.
Best,
