I would say that yes they do make a difference. If you're an aromatic fella or have trouble with gurgles I've found that they can eliminate that entirely. Can you smoke without them? Of course, and it's all up to what you prefer. How long? Hard to say, I've never measured. It'll depend on what you smoke with it and you can always give them a soak in alcohol or a plain old water rinse to clean them up. My opinion? I like them. They're about the only filter I'll use unless having one fitted makes for a better feeling draw.

The Brigham Site (see the "Our System" section) claims they are good for 20-30 smokes if alternating between two, using one while the other is drying.
I have used my filters not yet ten times each and they are still almost like new.

My Brigham is my best pipe for aromatics which tend to smoke a bit wet.

85% of my pipe fulls r with one of my 3 brigs. i have 5 filters on the go all the time. when im done smokin i run a cleaner tru pipe (and filter) all the way to the bowl(it usually takes a nack to do this; ya gotta bend cleaner just right). On my next smoke i use another brig and repeat process. as pipes cool down i take filter out an put it on shelf and run cleaner the stem of pipe. Just before i go to bed, i take all used filters to the kitchen sink and rinse under HOT water from tap. I take handful of liquid soap and roll the filters all at once around in my hands (washing em) then i rinse really well again with HOT tap water. I set filters on a cloth over nite an by morning they are perfectly dry!!!!! I know thats a long read an a bit over the top but i wanted u to git the whole picture. Anyway, by doin this, which only takes about 3 minutes, i have about 30 smokes on each filter right now and not showing alot of discolouration. Probably good for another 10-15 smokes each yet!!!!!
I find with the rockmaple filter i git no bite from the VA.

I own a two Brigham pipes.

The hot soapy water and rinse is a great idea; i will try it, as well as keeping a few rock maple filters out so that I can rotate.

When I clean mine, I dip pipe cleaners in 151 rum, and run them through. I then wipe the outside with a little rum and let them dry. Works will for me.

Any other Brigham smokers have ideas as to treating the filters?

All good advice, can't really add anything new except I have tried making my own filters on the lathe and they do not work nearly as well so there must be something in the process that makes the rock maple work better. Best of luck my Brighams give me some of my best smokes.

I smoke the older Brighams (with the metal inserts rather than the newer type) but gave up using filters long ago. They smoke just fine without the filters. The filters do work quite well. I used to clean them every now and then in alcohol -- lost track of how long I could keep a filter going.

i love my brighams! have 6 now..i have found though that the filters can be tempermental, sometimes work great sometimes not so great. i have had the tenon replaced on a chinook that just never smoked right with them. have another that a actually cut the tenon down to the size of a savinelli filter, as they are cheaper to use..but then the others work great. and last a long time
