I have an anniversary coming up and I was informed by my in-laws that I need to choose a pipe for a gift.

Since I prefer filtered pipes my choice is leaning towards Stanwell. Has anyone used a Viking or Boa model?

Could you share your opinion? I imagine the new pipe will be dedicated solely to Ten to Midnight.

I have only smoked my 1 Stanwell. It however does mot come with a filter. I havent heard of the name you speak of but mine is a featherweight 240 and it smokes flawlessly.

Only certain Stanwells are filtered. You could also try Vauen or Design Berlin. They use the 9mm filters that are popular in Europe. Most Savinellis are fitted for the 6mm filters.

I have not smoked Stanwell filtered pipes, but the Stanwell pipes I own have excellent fit and finish, open but not over-open airways, and seem well above their price points. I think you'll be satisfied, but be sure your family knows exactly which pipe you want, and be sure you know it is filtered if that's what you want. In my experience, Pipes and Cigars has far-and-away the best selection and pricing on Stanwell.

All my Stanwells are 9mm. I have at least six, and I love them all, whether economy or handmade. They make a great filter pipe. I love the two images above -- should feel fine in the hand, and they will smoke effortlessly.

I've switched to only 9mm as well. I don't have a Viking or a Boa - but every Stanwell I have is an excellent smoking pipe. (2 - 234s, 2 - 95s, an HCA I & an unfiltered 86 I sold). I would buy any Stanwell without hesitation. Rattray is on par and worth considering, a little more pricey but as good or better looking than my HCA I. Cupojoes.com has 9mm Savinellis too, every Sav I've ever smoked was great, have 3 I love.

I have a fine and lovely smattering of 9mm Stanwell pipes... they have all been excellent for me. One is kind of a briar calabash design... another, very similar to the one above they called a "Nanna Iverson" design. And a couple others. They all smoke well and with filters which I prefer also. I'd buy more in the future. And plus one on the Design Berlin and Vauen lines of filter pipes as well. DB's are the backbone of my collection.
