Title edited. Please use capitals for all proper nouns, even Borkum Riff.

I recently bought this. Tastes like cigarette ash. Any thoughts?
Also, I've been smoking pipes for about a year. I enjoy dark fired, condor plug, Mr b's wild anatolia and even borkum riff. I don't like colts deluxe or a German blend called no1 blend. Suggestions welcome.

You are smoking it too fast. Slow way down, and see if that brings out more of the favors for you. Just remember not to puff harder when you do get some flavors, because that will kill what flavors you are starting to get.

Tell me more about this... Mr b's wild anatolia. Where can I find some?

I bought mine from a tobacconist in moncton Canada. Seems to be available online though
Thank you, had never heard of it, and the name stood out to me, because I have an Anatolian Shepherd. Too bad it is a cherry blend. I was hoping for some Turkish tobaccos in there, given the Anatolian name.

I hope my advice helps some. When some blends are pushed too hard, the tobaccos burns before it can release the oils, which is where the flavors are. The actual incinerated leaf, doesn't have much taste. It is in the tobacco surrounding the fire where the flavors are given off.

Happy smoking.

Any advice on the Virginia's? I'm not getting anything pleasant but full disclosure, colts deluxe is an over the counter blend in canada. The other, no1 blend I bought at Munich Airport for $8. Supposedly vanilla flavored. Smells like vanilla. Burns like Virginia (which it is) but with zero flavour and a chemical like aftertaste. Maybe I just don't like Virginia blends.

Unfortunately, most aromatics are this way. We tend to suggest that smokers get their skills down pat before trying aromatics. But, I might suggest MacBaren's Vanilla Flake, but hurry before it is affected by the STG buy out.

For Virginias... if they don't immediately appeal to you, that is ok. The flavors are more akin to teas, very subtle in comparison to other genres of tobacco. If they don't come easy to you, just stick with what you like.

If you've not yet tried a latakia blend, you might look around and explore what you can find in this genre. The taste is definitely easy to come by, and they smoke really easily also. AKA; English blends or Baltic blends.

those VA type of blends are most effected by how gently they're smoked or not. Also seem most tolerant of being super dry without losing flavor.
The other thing then smoking too fast or hard that makes a pipe taste like a cigarette is not cleaning the pipe regularly.
