Hi, I'm new to pipe smoking. I just wanted to ask for advice on a new pipe. I live in Reykjavik Iceland and there is really only one decent tobacco store here. They mainly sell two brands, Stanwell and Vauen (the have a cheaper brand also but I can't remember the name of it). I can get Stanwell pipe of the year 2012 for about 110 dollars in this store and the Vauen is a bit more expensive I think, maybe 135 dollars or something like that. The Stanwell fits my budget but my question is should I try to find another pipe on ebay? Do you know if the Stanwell is good and is it a good deal - $110? Personally I think the Stanwell a bit small but maybe I would just get used to it. On ebay I've seen some pipes that I have liked, like the Bjarne Viking Elsinore, Brebbia Sabbiata Nera, Savinelli Sistina Rustic to name a few. I really would appreciate you're input. By the way I just missed out on a Dunhil Shell Briar on ebay. Was working when the auction ended. It went for $111.

:puffy: velkomin í umræðum :puffy:
Nei, ég tala ekki íslensku, en ég hef ást á skandinavísku, ég get lesið sænsku smá.
I'm a Stanwell man myself and I'd recommend it since in more cases than not they make some very fine smoking pipes. That is also a very fair price for a POY. Are those pipe 9mm filter pipes? Most Vauens are 9mm and a lot of the Stanny POY are too.
Do you plan on smoking with a filtered pipe, or would you prefer a nonfiltered one?
May I ask about tobacco in Iceland?

Is it highly taxed? Very expensive?

A good range of brands available?
Skál!

You can get an il ceppo for about that if you look hard enough on eBay. There pipes easily rival Ser Jacoppo pipes and they smoke wonderful.

rothnh - Thank you for the warm welcome and your excellent answer. Of course you're right about the advantages of dealing with a local tobacconist. The Stanwell I'm talking about is the one designed by Tom Eltang. The store just marked it down from about $145 to $110 (or 18.000 ISK to 14.000 ISK) I don't really know why it is so cheap but then again our currency isn't worth much nowadays. A few years back 18.000 ISK (Icelandic krona) was worth $280 now it's only worth $145. And by the way, I definatly don't want a filtered one.
misterlowercase - Gott að sjá smá íslensku hérna á vefnum ;) The Stanwell I'm talking about is exactly this one: http://www.danishpipeshop.com/product.asp?product=1699 . Tobacco and alcohol are very highly taxed here in Iceland. A bottle of Smirnoff vodka (700 ml) is about $40. and a pack of Winston costs $8-9. There are very few pipe tobacco brands available, the best one here is probably Mac Baren.
May I also ask you guys what you think about this pipe?: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=390551589525&fromMakeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:top:en
And would you put the Bjarne, Brebbia and Savinelli in the same bracket as Stanwell?

The Stanwell looks great and the price seems fair. ebay US you'll pay a lot in shipping and the ebayUK seems a bit scarce and expensive.
Eric Nording is a cool pipe maker; he'll put out affordable smoking pipes and do crazy FreeHand’s that pull in some money. The only reason I don't have one is everything goes to tobacco right now. I've got my estates and now that the shop from the 80's has almost been completely located and being assembled, will be making some pipes so I'll have a rack full of personal and different pipes.

Good god man buy that Stanwell. That is a beautiful pipe. I own 3 Stanwells and they all smoke great. Never owned a Vauen but would love to try one. They seem to make affordable well made pipes.

Well guys, I just couldn't wait any longer and since most of you recommended the Stanwell I went and bought it today. When I came into the tobacco store I was gonna buy Stanwell POY2012 but then I saw a Stanwell Army Mount 62 and fell in love with it. It just felt right holding it. I got it for $115 and hopefully that is a reasonable price for this pipe. It would be nice to here what you think of this pipe. Here are some pictures I took just now:

Welcome to the site Magic. I think you did great with that pipe. It is a great shape, has an awesome blast and nice thick walls which should give you a cool smoke. Congrats on your purchase. I think that pipe will be great for flakes if you have any.

I smoke mostly Danish Freehands, a lot of my collection are Nording Fs, and A's, as well several of the unfinished Autographs. Like them because the large bowls and thicker walls just seem to work better. That, and a 1/4 or 1/8 bend stem rather than straights to save wear on the jaw when smoking them at work, and working at the computer. most of them have a bit larger bore, which also allows for cooler draw.
was going ask where the pipe shop you mentioned was in Reykjavik? Might be over there in the next 6 months, and I would rather not go "cold turkey" :D

Great looking Stanwell, should smoke very well by all accounts! My one (so far) Stanwell is by far the best-smoking pipe that I have, and they're all stunning. And yes, if that's a true military/army mount it will prove to be very convenient.

Fine pipe, great price. Take care of it, it will last you the rest of your (I hope long) life. While you're breaking

that one in, and to give it a "rest," to dry out in rotation, you may want to order several Missouri Meerschaum

corn cob pipes. These are popular here at Forums, both as inexpensive rotation pipes, and as just plain good

smokers.
