When buying a new pipe I think it should come with details pertaining to suggestions/instructions on which cap/hat will be most complimentary to said pipe. Don't you agree? I've always thought the pipe smoking Gentleman wears a driving cap while 'out on the town', pipe in mouth.
Seriously now, I've been thinking I need a cap and the driving cap seems my style. What is your preferred cap/hat of choice?
I'll take the following cap in black/grey and I wish it came in a brown tweed too,

haha! I've been thinking about getting a pipe smoking hat. I've thought of a fedora. I like those, and have had a few. A bowler (derby) would be kinda neat. I've never had one, but have always wanted one. Or perhaps a top hat. But I've got a skinny face, so not sure if that would be a good idea.

There's some sort of marketing research dissertation here. Guys, and maybe gals, who smoke pipes

seem to love hats! I'm a hat collector. My wife is a hat collector. I don't especially associate the

hats with the pipes, but most who post a picture here wear hats, and nothing run-of-the-mill,

it seems. I have driving caps, newspaper boy caps, ball caps galore, a Borsolino, a porkpie, and so

on. My sister brought me a fez from Istanbul, not the red conical Shriner's type but a nice

embroidered cylindrical job, pretty neat. I mostly smoke hatless, but maybe I should rethink this.

The churchwarden and the fez, for starters. A poker with the porkpie. A corncob with the

John Deer straw broad brim. And so on. The big freestyle with the Borsolino.

I would like a nice hat the only hats I currently own are my Great Grandpa's favorite hat which is too small for my melon of a head and my Dad's Stetson which I'll probably bring back from NY next weekend and have cleaned. I only where a fitted ball cap otherwise.

I love Panama hats, but hats of any kind are hardly worn in Israel since they are considered too dressy.

I always take my Panama hat abroad and wear it proudly.

I usually wear a fedora, driving cap or my favorite Atlanta Braves ball cap my Dad bought me at the 1999 All-Star game when I was a kid. Looking to buy a bowler one of these days. :D

I used to wear a wool cap similar to a driving cap, but more structured, all the time. I got out of the habit some time ago. Now that I'm putting together Steampunk outfits, I'm starting to collect more hats. I'll probably designate the black fez as my smoking hat until such time as I can sew my own proper tarboosh-style smoking cap... although the black topper would be appropriate for evening events. I've got a leather Glengarry for my Scottish-inspired daywear outfits, and a flat gambler-style hat (think Maverick or Paladin) for Western events.
We've got a cruise coming up that will involve multiple costume changes - I'll post pics when we get back. :D

I’m usually sporting a flat cap of some kind when I go out. I have several of them, including a couple of gatsbys. You can kind of see one of the gatsbys in my profile picture, but I normally prefer my tweed one over that one. I also have a number of ball caps, most with brewery names on them, and a military style ball cap, with the straight sides. During the summer I will sometimes wear a bucket hat or one of my two fedoras. Both are lighter, straw, construction. I have a darker one that can be worn with a coat and tie, and still look good, and a light straw colored one that I wear with the brim up when the mood suits me. I own two bowlers, but I never really wear them.
I think there is some truth to people who are into pipes often being into hats and other affectations. I sometimes wear suspenders and a bow tie, if the occasion is suited to it, and I’ll often show up to a meeting wearing a vest under my jacket and get a lot of positive comments. Heck, I’ve even been known to throw a silk square into my jacket pocket, from time to time.
Phred, interesting you mention the steampunk thing again. We were browsing a steampunk clothing store on Haight a few months back and my wife bought a pretty cool vented, leather top hat. I really don’t know where she’s going to wear the thing, but it does look nice.

I wear a Donegal cap, made popular by the Flying Columns during the Irish War of independence c.1921. I wear it religiously where ever I go.

Yep - bringing dapper back, one waistcoat at a time.
I enjoy a lot of the steampunk vibe. I think I'm a little more into the whole "chap" side of things or the the "chappist" look, including getting straight razor shaves, and that sort of thing. I've never really gotten into steampunk myself, though I appreciate it, but I also like going to events like the Dickens Christmas Fair and the local Highland Games and interacting with all the characters, which my wife hates. I forced her to go to a character breakfast once at Disneyland, this was even before we had kids, and she could barely take it.
