Burnt Marks

The top (SIDES) of my pipe bowl is getting burnt marks. Is that normal? How can I avoid it?
I use matches to light up my pipe fyi.

Okay! Will try that out. I am afraid that the burnt marks has gotten too deep into the wood and unable to do so

Just hold the flame further from the top of the pipe. You can draw the flame down to just the tobacco, avoiding the rim.

Also, leave a little room between the top of the tobacco and the rim. You don't have to fill the pipe to the top, and as the tobacco expands from the heat, it won't scorch the rim.

Don't worry too much, rub some vergin olive oil on it every now and then, try doing as suggested keep the flame away from the rim.

I had an estate Falcon with bad burn, particularly inside the bowl near the top. Had to sand it with sandpaper.

"Use it or lose it" is my motto.

Also, try not to pack the tobacco so close to the rim of the pipe. When you apply heat to tobacco it’ll expand and jump up a bit. That can cause oils from the tobacco to “spill over”and tarnish the rim. Try leaving a bit of a gap between the top of the leaf and the rim of the bowl.

The idea is to wet the rim before lighting to help prevent scorching.
