I don’t review tobacco because I haven’t been smoking long and my opinions of tobacco keep changing. This isn’t a real review, just my observation after one bowl.

I just received some tobacco in the mail today, and the first one I tried was the BL/WB. I have been finding myself drawn to certain burley blends lately, and I am trying a bunch of “codger” type blends. I really enjoy Stokkebyes Cube Cut and the H&H Burley Kake, and before I stock up I wanted to try some other tobaccos in the same vein.

The first thing I noticed is that the tobacco has a lot more bag scent than the others I have tried in this genre. It smelled like an aromatic, but I didn’t think this one was supposed to be an aromatic.

To make a long story short, in this tobacco I haven’t found a basic burley that I like better than Cube Cut or Burley Kake, but instead I found the aromatic that is in my brain when I think of pipe tobacco. The way I thought pipes smelled as a child; that is how BL/WB seems to me. I find it closer to Captain Black than SWR.

I like this tobacco as an aromatic, it is sort of what I was looking for that way. It reminds me of 1Q a little bit. This is really the aromatic smell and taste that has been in my mind for most of my life.

I didn’t find a better “codger” blend here, but I found an aromatic that I enjoy. I will be keeping some of this around for the occasional bowl, as I don’t smoke straight up aromatics that much.

that is lame. Reviews aren't about being so good at tasting tobacco they're about sharing ones experience with the blend. It's just as important in my opinion to have reviews from newbs as it is to have Jim Inks reviews.

that is lame. Reviews aren't about being so good at tasting tobacco they're about sharing ones experience with the blend. It's just as important in my opinion to have reviews from newbs as it is to have Jim Inks reviews.

It isn’t because I am not good enough at tasting tobacco, but because I have little time smoking with many tobaccos. If I am going to call something a review, I’d like more experience so I can have some real context in which to evaluate the tobacco.

Other people can do whatever they like, but I won’t post something I call a “review” until I am very comfortable with my smoking technique and have tried a lot of different tobacco. I have found as my technique gets better, my opinions have changed on a few different blends. Had I posted a review of those tobaccos, I would now feel obligated to re-write them. If I write a review, I’d like to do it just once. I honestly don’t feel I am depriving the world of anything just because I don’t post reviews.

Maybe you still think it is lame, but this is my explanation for not posting something as a review.

I just got some of the Sutliff Edgeworth match today also, I’ll have to give that a try.

Sorry you're not lame. Just the idea that a review has any more qualifications then someone relating their experience. Now if you just don't want to or your personal standard is something different that's fine. But at the end of the day a review really is just a relaying of ones experience. As long as you tell the relevant details it's useful. For example yes your level of experience is worth noting. Like if you haven't tried very many other blends of that sort, it's worth noting. I just really think the broader the types of reviews the better.

Thanks for posting this. I’ve been sampling WCC blends and I didn’t get that one. Cube Cut is one of my favorites as well.

Like Cube Cut and Burley Kake, Stubb’s Pipe has a noticeable topping, just not as much BL/WB.

I'm a burley devotee, and I remember smoking BL/WB. I really enjoyed it but have never re-ordered it, maybe because it was a tad too mild. Sometimes a mild blend is just what I need, but I go for something a little stronger and/or more complex. Right now, I'm really enjoying GLP Barbary Coast, a cubed burley based blend with brandy flavoring.

You were correct, having my second bowl of the Sutliff right now. I still haven't tried Granger (mostly because you cannot get it in a small package), is it similar to the Sutliff Match? I know it is a burley that has some molasses flavor (at least that is what I have read), which sounds good to me.

Maybe I will, I'm working through a bunch of "codger" type blends right now and perhaps I will make a record of it. Basically, I am trying a ton of them so I can stock up on a couple few of them once I decide which are my favorties. Plus Jim said Stokkebye Cube Cut was only a 2.5 star tobacco, when it is clearly a 3 star tobacco. Someone must correct the record!

I’m in your camp! I don’t think I could review a tobacco in a way that would mean very much to someone else. But I’m figuring out what I like. Having some Wilke Rum & Maple at the moment - I like it! And know I like it enough I’ll buy a larger package from Wilke.

I believe that you’ll find the Match much more flavorful than Granger. The RR has a topping that actually tastes good and it’s a very, very good blend. —- but for my tastes, I enjoy more simple tobacco flavor with just the slightest hint of sweetness.

I find Carter Hall too heavily flavored if that helps to understand my tastes . Carter Hall isn’t overly topped, but it is for me.

You may find Granger bland in comparison to the Match RR. I personally get a wonderful flavor from Granger. Best of luck to you.

Grangerous, every time I see your picture I want to try Granger! I've not had a lot of luck with burleys, they're either too harsh (pegasus) or too flavoured (SWR). There is a burley taste I'm looking for but not found it yet, maybe I'll find it in Granger.
