I originally couldn't stand the HH Burley Flake I purchased but after a couple months I mixed it with Newminster 400 and enjoyed it that way. Got a tin of Irish Flake recently, do enjoy it alone but mixed it with an aromatic last night and it was an exceptional smoke, revelatory even. I am a University Flake solo partaker too. Can anyone recommend a burley flake sold in bulk similar to any of these?

I have yet to see a supplier produce a burley flake that comes in bulk, however I can recommenced you a broken flake that is pure burley, although not quite as rich/bold as the blends you mentioned.

I've been diggin' on Newminster Light Burley. It's a superb straight forward burley blend at a cost efficient price. On the lighter side though, it sure doesn't lack any of the burley flavors when one thinks of the typical flavors of the leaf.

I've gone through 2 oz already. Don't let it dry out too much otherwise it becomes too bite prone and it has an odd taste. Keep it slightly moist and you'll be rewarded with some great flavors. I even picked up an SWR/ Edgeworth note on my last few bowls.

Will certainly try some of this out. If only Newmister made a Burley 400.

Rumours of st Bruno bulk next year.., but that’ll be in a 1lb box, so if that’s how you are going to purchase it you may as well grab a box of 400 and a box of hh burley and mix away.

not a flake, but bulk and similar to University flake (at least for me - without plum topping) is newminster 403. This is possible my favourite bulk tobacco

I’ll have to give the 403 a try. The 400 is a solid blend.

I have yet to try Bruno, should order a tin soon in preparation. Do you prefer it to University Flake?

You often read that "if this was the only blend available..." praise on Tobacco Reviews, and think "hmm, whatever" but really, I can say that about Newminster 400.

ASAP on the 403 I guess.

403 was one of the blends i prioritised buying when I found out about the law change in NZ. I smoke it exclusively in a clay pipe, but I’m sure it would smoke great in a briar dedicated to the genre.

I have a bit of st Bruno cellared for sentimental reasons - it was all my great grandfather smoked. I can’t comment on the current release but it seems to be celebrated by burley smokers. I’d definitely order a pouch of ready rubbed just to try it regardless. The only version I have tried came from a 1980s tin I got recently. The tin note was incredible, like Turkish delights, but the topping obviously had dissipated with age. Nevertheless it was the finest earthy smoke I have ever had. Seriously was just like slow drip coffee as I kept it just on the point of going out.

I appreciate your well worded sentimentality. Cheers.

True. Still quite the hefty price. Newminster Light Burley comes in about 1/2 the cost.

Compared to Newminster bulk, it is a bit pricy. But also consider it probably works out to less than fifty cents per bowl, then it seems like a bargain. I will add a couple of ounces of the 403 to an order in the near future based upon your Stirling review.

He got you too

I ordered a tin of the Irish Flake due to the thread here.

That's how the tobacco crumbles I guess...
