I just got a delivery of some bulk tobaccos from SP and among it was 4 oz of Pegasus. I used to smoke a lot of pegasus, ordered it from sp in the 8 oz tins, which have been discontinued.

I have only smoked 1 bowl of todays delivery but from what i remember the tinned was noticeably sweeter than the bowl of the bulk i smoked today. It could be that my palate just hasnt adjusted, i have been smoking more heavily topped tobaccos recently like CH and bourbon street, but to those who have had the chance to compare:

Is the tinned version of pegasus sweeter or different than the bulk?

When we make batches of any blend that is to be packaged in both tins and in bulk, we blend the total quantity that is needed for all sizes and then allocate the tobacco accordingly. The tobacco in bulk and the tobacco in tins is all made the same way and at the same time. We do not have different recipes for tin vs. bulk facings, nor do we have different tobaccos for tin vs. bulk.

It was probably some palate fatigue. I have only had the bulk Pegasus, but i've experienced the same thing with many blends before.

I smoke a lot of Pegasus, but I've only had it in bulk. But, I don't 100% trust my senses on blends. I can like a blend a lot one day for it's fruitiness or fermented flavor, but then the next six smokes, I get something different from it. I think that mood, body chemistry, what we had for dinner, and a whole other host of random variables come into play.
I can be that way with coffee too. The second cup of the same blend of beans can taste different, probably based on the same variables.

This is why i switch up what I am smoking throughout the day.
But, I am now interested in trying the tinned version.

I have experienced a difference in tin vs bulk tobacco but not with Pegasus. For me it was bulk 965 that absolutely sucked compared to the tin version. At the time I figured it was probably more of a result of different moisture content than anything else.

Hi, jeremyreeves, and thank you for chiming in from the blending floor. That is what I thought was the case, but it is nice to have it confirmed. Crops change from year to year, as may sourcing in other ways. I suspect if you smoke a few more bowls, the blend will come back in focus more as you remember it. I like Pegasus and will likely order it (in bulk) in the future.

I would recommend that purchases in bulk be transferred to air-tight jars upon arrival for storage. A little bit of time in a jar or any other air-tight container, will basically close the flavor gap between bulk and tin versions. We use fairly heavy 6 mil bags for our bulk products, but they are definitely not ideal for long-term storage. Any time I purchase bulk tobacco whether it is ours or someone else's, I transfer the tobacco to a jar immediately. I do the same thing with tins that I have open for longer than a week or two.

Happy to be of service! On the subject of crop changes, I approach sourcing leaf very carefully and I always start looking for a particular tobacco type well in advance of the time we will need it. This allows us to make gradual transitions at the blending table, and it also allows me the time to find the best quality lots and make sure that we are able to get enough to last us a while. That sourcing process takes time, and often requires travel, so I would rather do it every two or thee years as opposed to annually or batch by batch for any given tobacco component. We make all of our products using 14 different blending components. If I had to source all new leaf all the time we would never get anything done. :)

Thanks for the definitive answers. I have decanted it to a mason jar and in the meantime im blaming my smoking too many aros lately for my first impression of the bulk.

After a couple of bowls its smoking more like i remember. I think my tastebuds got a little overwhelmed by rum and maple and bourbon street.

While the tobacco is the same, the chemical change in a tin environment vs. in loose bulk storage will differ. Sometimes, modulo some bacteria or time or temperature or other happenstance, the difference can be noticeable.

FWIW, I think a short bit of aging really makes Pegasus shine. It could be that what you were smoking from the tins was a bit older and more melded together than the bulk. I also used to buy the 8oz tins and had to start buying the bulk. Some time in a jar makes it taste "normal" to me.
