I wondered about that... if they fly off too easily, slip too much, etc... well, I get the motor on Saturday, see what I'm dealing with at that time and check the Princess Auto (Canadian version of Harbour Freight) and see what they have for arbors. They have some good prices for the various 8" wheels, but, none have a solid/leather centre to work on the tapered arbors. Though I saw someone online say they varnished the centre of their pads to make them more solid and work better on the tapered arbors.

Well, grabbed that motor for $10 and seems pretty good. 1/3hp 1750rpm, spins clowckwise, and had the plug wired in already.
Had a home made adapter plate on it for using sanding discs, which taken apart I can see won't work for the buffing wheels.
1/2" shaft, so grabbing this off eBay... should be good for my needs. Now to mount it, and add a switch.
