This just in from Lou at the NY Pipe Club
I had the honor of sharing more than a few bowls with Dan over the past several years. He was a mensch in the truest sense of the work. Kind, curious, lighthearted and always a pleasure to spend time with. The NY Pipe Club meetings, and the world at large, will not be the same without him.

Dan was a true gentleman; look up the phrase in any dictionary and you'll see his picture. Great sense of humor; incredible expertise in the lore of old Brit and American wood; endless enthusiasm; a unique ability (which I envied!) to find amazing pipes lying hidden under a pile of dross; and just an all-round fun guy to smoke a bowl and hang out with. I'm floored by his death, and send my thoughts and prayers to his family.

Clearly a pipe man of distinction and well-loved by many. You can't do better than that.

I met this gentleman on several occasions over the years. He was a lovely fellow who always seemed to see the humor in every situation. The last time I saw him I joked that he was the only man I knew who could get change out of a cent. He laughed and then proceeded to ask if he could have bowl of whatever it was I was smoking! On one occasion I sent him some clay pipes he wanted to try and I told him to coat the tips with nail varnish. The next time I saw him I had one one of those 'wow dude seriously' moments when he showed me the sparkly nail varnish finish he has put on the mouth pieces of both pipes. I was looking forward to seeing him at the NY Pipe Club picnic in August and now I guess the world will hold a little less sunshine because of his passing. Embrace life my friends as the alternatives leave a whole lot to be desired!

The idea of a clay with sparkles instead of the usual plain red.... Someone like that is someone my life's less for not having known. :(
