Decided to give Mr. Brog a try, I was intrigued by the pearwood and always pleased with Czech pipes, so I ordered a No. 13 Dezerter off Amazon. Gorgeous pipe, but daintier than I would have thought, probably a 20-min. smoke at max. Bowl is deep but very narrow. I report the pearwood does impart a unique taste on first smoke, but not unpleasant. I tried the Peterson Irish Oak first, but given the slight fruitiness of the wood I may try an aromatic next. Great draw, smokes very dry. It came with a gurgler, but of course I pulled that out and tossed it. I have another Brog in the mail, a semi-churchwarden, and we'll see if that suffers from the same small bowl issue. But in all, it wasn't $25 misspent.

I've been enjoying my Dezerter. I've been smoking Burley 'codger' blends in it so far (Sir Walter Raleigh, Sugar Barrel) - and I haven't really noticed the smaller bowl being an issue. On the other hand, I've been consciously focusing on slowing down - I'll have to time a bowl tonight and see how long it takes me. The Dezerter appears to be the same basic bowl shape (and size) as the Old Army 21 model.

I have two Brogs, one is a pear and the other a briar. They are both great smokers, but I like the briar a bit better. In fact, it is the only pipe which I ever purchased new that required no break in. It smoked great right out of the box.

I've got two Brog's and I find myself regularly jotting down "had one of those 'perfect pipes' in the Brog again" fairly regularly in my tobacco log.
Cheap and easy, man.

To be clear, most of my pipes have a bowl aperture just wide enough to admit my thumb, this one has a bore that only just admits my index finger to the second knuckle. Only a little annoying for packing. Otherwise it is an excellent pipe, I'm coming to find. Can't wait for the second pipe to arrive.
