That is the very well engineered Brigham maple filter. And, yes, they can be a PITA, but they're really one of the best filters in the pipe world.
After your pipe cools off remove the filter and rinse it off with tap water, Hawk. Allow it to dry and tuck it back in. The filter should be good for 35 to 40 smokes but YMMV.
My Brigham is the only pipe in my collection I smoke with a filter. It smokes well without the filter but does much when I use one.

I love my Brigham and the filters are awesome. After a smoke I rinse it with warm water, let it dry and tuck in a fresh one. I have 3 filters in rotation for each kind of tobacco, one great benefit is that they season in just like good briar. In turn I keep the cake inside the bowl minimal. Always delivers a dry cool delicious smoke. In rotation, filters last you forever! Like an 8 pack lasts me half a year.
Not a PITA at all. :)
P.S.. lazydog: DBS are crazy good smokers. I have a rusticated bent Dublin in Winslow design (faceted) and it smokes pretty much everything to fine white ash right to the bottom.

I just put the filters back in a few of my Brighams after years of not using them. They're excellent with or without, and I love the filter with aromatics. Live and learn...
