I have 5 Brighams. Like @Piping Abe said, they are fine without the filter (distillator). You may even find that you prefer the open draw of filterless.
I usually use the inserts as I purchased several boxes (8-packs) when I started buying the pipes. It just felt wasteful not to. But the rock maple doesn't seem to be as absorbent as the balsa inserts in Savinelli or Rossi pipes. The Brigham distillators do discolor over time, so it appears they are doing something. And the tube shape makes it easy to pass a pipe cleaner if you get a clog.
But I would not let an aversion to buying or using filters dissuade you from trying a Brigham. They are, in my opinion, fine pipes at that price point.
