from my experience crumble cakes can sometimes resist burning even when broken up more. And other times I can take a pinch of one not break it up and stuff it the pipe and have it smoke down like nothing. Maybe it's just worked out that way or maybe something about crumble cakes does something that makes bits and pieces of it flame resistant. Honestly my best guess is some pieces of leaf seem to be more compressed then others and maybe smooshing a leaf down to tracing paper thickness makes it not burn so good.

Thanks. I think the moisture is perfect out of the tin. I'll try a small chunk a bit later and see how that burns.

Maybe reduce the pieces in size and let them dry overnight or for a full day. If it still won't stay lit, I'd use either a hand grater or a spice/coffee grinder to reduce the size further. I did this with the superb blend that is notoriously hard to keep lit, McC's Dark Star, and it worked like a charm. I've enjoyed the whole lovely tin this way, burning as evenly and well as anything. It really delivered the full keyboard of flavors in this classic Virginia blend. I had a sample of Briar Fox and found it a little too mild for me, so I jazzed it up with a stronger burley and that suited me better. For whatever reason, it burned alright for me.

Never had too much of a problem with it. With age it tends to burn better for me. The cake bonds together better and almost has an oily feel. Burns superb.

I like to bone dry mine and rub it out. Briar fox is an excellent combination of burley and Virginia. Aged, it seems to get a sweet and "dirty" taste that I like. "Dirty" for lack of a better word... I guess that earthy and dark in flavor is what I was looking for. Maybe a touch of cocoa.

I've just finished a jar of this, and it is one of my favorite after work blends.
