I had some extra cash over the holidays and decided to buy myself a pipe for my birthday. I've been wanting one of Chris Morgan's Arbutus pipes ever since he released them and had a hard time deciding on the bent brandy or the cherrywood. Went with the brandy because it's a shape I don't own yet. Got my package last week Friday and took a quick pic in the backyard while smoking the first bowl.

I was surprised to see a second pipe in the package, the cherrywood pipe I was debating.

My first thought was that I got the wrong package, he couldn't possibly know I bought the pipe on my birthday. Was going to send him an email when I noticed a post on his instagram. He was giving away free mystery packs with purchases over $99. Lucky me, if I ordered the brandy the day before like I planned, I wouldn't have received the mystery gift.
I didn't know what to expect when breaking in strawberry wood, all I could find online was to smoke slower because the wood is more prone to burnouts. So far I haven't noticed much of a difference while breaking them in compared to briar but I can say they smoke like a dream. Lighter than a similar sized briar pipe and smokes much cooler. The brandy only gets hot at the very top of the bowl and the cherrywood barely gets warm. They also seem to dry out faster than briar. I run a pipe cleaner after each smoke and the next day it seems dry enough to fill it up again. Smoked the brandy every day for the past week and it surprises me with how well it smokes.
Does anyone here have any experience with strawberry wood? or want to show off the pipes in their collection? These are factory made so I can't even imagine how much better a hand made pipe would smoke.

I got this strawberry wood from Clark Layton last winter. I was astounded at how light this pipe is. Smokes like a dream and is starting to color nicely. Actually, Peck made me buy it after 4 scotches but it was a good decision. I love it and I'm sure you will enjoy yours just as much.

Yo baaro - nice eye! Good Karma for you already this year. I don't recall if papi's Layton inspired me, but it was about the same time that I saw Sally The Pipe Tart's gorgeous Becker in his signature squat tomato/saucer shape at the New York Show. Being strawberrywood made it extra-intriguing. It is coloring nicely and is one of my very best puffers. I don't know how much of that is the s-wood, since most of my Beckers (briar, morta) are wonderful.
Several of the Beckers have unusually shaped chambers. The bottoms are not simple cylinders or cones. I wonder if this is part of the Becker magic.
