Just put in my first order for some Boswell blends: Piper's Pleasure, Berry Cobbler, Rasberry Cream, Northwoods and Christmas Cookie. Yum yum, can't wait.
Afterwards, I starting thinking about how interesting it is that such a serious pipe making company primarily blends and sells aromatics. I have this preconception that serious pipes should be equated with serious pipe tobacco: VaPers like Escudo, G.L Pease blends, SG blends, Peterson flakes, heaving hitting vitamin n blends, etc.
I'm interested in finding out which of you limit yourself to certain types of pipe tobacco: aromatics, english blends, burleys, cavendish, cigar blends, etc. Are there certain types you refuse to touch? Or, do you like a little bit of everything, depending on the circumstance?

I smoke what I like. I prefer English/Balkan blends, but I like everything. I dont get what you mean by "serious pipe tobacco". How are aromatics not "serious"?

There is no limit to your personal pleasure. I know guys that are considered serious pipe smokers and have smoked only aro's for 30 years. Find out what you love to smoke and do not worry about what others think. We hear are all very open minded and here to help. I love all blends, depending on the day or mood I'm in. Lately I've loved Petersons Sunset Breeze, great aro, but currently I'm smoking a burley with cigar leaf. I really love Virginias on most days also....enjoy them all and welcome!

I also don't limit myself to just pipe tobacco. I had smoked a hookah earlier, I'm about to enjoy some snuff, and I also like cigars. Basically, I just like tobacco

I refuse to touch heavy Lats since they wreak havoc in my mouth. Don't know why or how. But VA's that others complain that they bite go fine with me.... Go figure. I blame it on body chemistry.
Besides that, bring it on ;-)

There are certain companies that do certain tobaccos certain ways that just dont agree with me, I.E., Hearth and Home burley blends dont agree with me well for some reason, and I have come to find that McClelland Virginia heavy mixtures dont agree well with me either. That being said, I have yet to meet a GL Pease blend I didnt like, and I love all the MacBaren aromatics that I have tried. As far as tobacco categories, such as burleys, VAs, VaPers, English, I will smoke pretty much anything. It just depends on what I have a craving for.

I smoked nothing but aromatics for about 15 years, pretty much 1Q or a similar bulk blend from my local B&M. Then I started reading online forums and started learning about the various types of tobaccos. Then I started going to pipe shows and learned even more.
Most aromatics start with cheap burley which is essentially flavorless. Then they add sugar, flavorings and chemicals. I realized that the tobacco was just a vehicle for the flavorings; I wasn't tasting tobacco. It reminded me of a hamburger made from cheap, low quality beef, but is LOADED with toppings.
For the last 10 years, I've been smoking primarily latakia blends and occasionally straight virginias. I prefer McClellands blends, but I also like C&D, GLP and H&H. I prefer these brands because I believe they use better quality leaf to begin with. When I smoke them I'm actually tasting the tobacco, not the toppings.
So to answer your question, I enjoy the flavors of quality tobaccos. Since I don't taste these flavors in aromatics or cheap drug store blends, I don't smoke them.

C&D makes Epiphany not Boswells
I think he meant he had an epiphany about Boswells, not that Boswells makes Epiphany
*face palm*
This made my whole freaking day... err night.
I even told it to my wife when she heard me laughing... and then she thought she would share funny stories in the reader's digest that she's reading for some very strange reason... FML

I am an eclectic smoker and have been for a long time. For instance, today I have smoked Boswell's No Bite Delite (aromatic), Boswell's Mild English (light English), C&D Bow-Legged Bear (heavy English, and am finishing the night with C&D Pirate Kake (very heavy English). I enjoy them all equally and am grateful that I have such a variety to choose from.
I disagree that all aromatics are made from cheap flavorless burley. For instance when I smoke 1Q in my Savinelli aromatic pipe it will leave the bottom wet and have some wet dottle. OTOH, when I smoke it with Boswell's No Bite Delite, the bottom of the pipe is completely dry and there is no dottle, just ash. The same is true of other Boswell aromatics. Of course Boswell aromatics are quite a bit more expensive than 1Q. I think this is because they use better quality base tobaccos.

Thanks for bringing those blends back up. I have tried Berry Cobbler, but not the others, it is time to order some more of their Christmas Cookie anyway, one of the only aros I like.

"I disagree that all aromatics are made from cheap flavorless burley. "
Smokey, I didn't say "all", I said "most". Given the sheer tonnage of cheap aromatics that are sold here in the U.S., I stand by my statement.
Regarding Boswell's aromatics, you mentioned their No Bite DeLite. The Boswell web site doesn't mention what it uses for the base of this blend. Can you tell me if it's Burley or Virginia?

I introduced a few friends out here on the rig to McClelland VBC, which is a butterscotch aromatic, and they have labeled it crack and cant get enough. I think the same thing about Caramel Rush. I enjoy aromatics just as much as I like Balkans, and rotate through them all. Life is too short to limit oneself.
