I know the Boswell Pipe reputation but have never tried their blends or delt with them personally until today when I ordered 4oz of English biscuit and 4 oz of Northwoods just to try them out. I was just looking to see the thoughts of the group about their blending's.

The Boswell blends are pretty highly regarded. Northwoods is the star of their line, but they have some great aromatic offerings in addition to their own VA flakes and bullseye coins. I like their Imperial English. And Christmas Cookie is a holiday favorite to satisfy the sweet tooth.

I picked up four of their blends last year and was not dissapointed:

  • Old School - burley and virginia. Great cocoa flavor with burley dominating.
  • Private Stock - VaPer blend with lovely stewed fruit and grassy notes.
  • Northwoods - great bold english with a good amount of latakia.
  • Mild English - maybe a light aromatic that surprised me and turned out to be my favorite.

Ones that stand out to me in various ways:

Northwoods is a sweetened cavendish based latakia mixture in the same general ballpark as FM Cellar and JFH Shortcut to Mushrooms were. The room note is of toasted marshmallow over campfire and my family loves when I smoke it. (Tier 1)

Countryside is a sweetened latakia mixture more comparable to Pembroke. No I'm not saying it's really a substitute for Pembroke, but it sort of brings it to mind for me, despite being very different. (Tier 2)

Military Force is an honorable mention as a latakia mixture with some burley and cherry topping. Strange but if you want some burley and cherry in your latakia, well here you go. (Tier 3)

JM's Private Stock is an underappreciated Dark and Red VaPer with a topping that's hard to identify, but I think maybe a smidgen of cocoa and smidgen of cherry. Really really nice. (Tier ... 1.5)

No Bite Delite is a tootsie roll aromatic. I don't think they were aiming for that but they got a dead ringer for tootsie roll and it's delicious. (Tier 2)

Christmas Cookie is one of the best aromatics ever produced by anyone anywhere. Hard to describe but it's what American aromatics would be in an alternate universe where they weren't trying to imitate a certain flavor exactly and where it came off like something completely natural. (Tier 1)

Christmas Cookie I think is the only one I remember trying off the top of my head. I'll have to look at thier offerings to remind myself. And I think that was a sample someone sent me way back when I first joined this forum.

Hello everyone. Can you recommend Boswell without Latakia? Do they have anything similar to Gregory Pease blends? I have a gut feeling that I'm going to like Hunter's Choice. My gut feeling is usually spot on.

I really like Boswells blends, both the English and aromatics. I tried their English sampler and my surprise favorite was Titus, a very mild all day blend with a good amount of flavor.

For their Aro's both Apple Strudel and Spice and Nice surprised me with how much I enjoyed them. The Christmas Cookie is a classic and for good reason, it literally tastes just like Christmas sugar cookies!

If you're curious to try some of their blends, they offer samplers. Just pick one that looks appealing and try them out.

answer to my own question both blends are decent nothing to write home about but not bad. As far as Boswell goes, I've been trying for two weeks to get them to respond about making a pipe, but I guess they're making enough money off of tobacco sales with all the closures that they can't be bothered with making a pipe. Needless to say, I'll do my buying elsewhere.

I have had nothing but excellent service from them so far, but I've found that the best way to reach them is just to call. FYI -- their site says they don't do commissioned pipes if that is what you are looking for.

I've never ordered from them, so I can't comment there, but I have tried some of their blends from some samples I received through fellow pipe smokers. Of the few I've tried, I thought they were very good. I keep telling myself to order some of their blends, but for some reason I haven't. I need to rectify that.
