Hi smokeytale, I've heard a recommendation for a book titled "The Ultimate Pipe Book" by Richard Carleton Hacker. I haven't read it myself, but it is available on Amazon. I think I will grab a copy for myself :)

All good choices and not in the high end "collectible" price range like Lopes' book on Artisans. Just remember not to take anything, including Hacker, as gospel. A lot of research had been done on pipes and their history since these books were published, and there is more up-to-date accurate info on line at Pipedia.org and other sites.

Rick Hacker's UPB was what got me going back in the day and his Rare Smoke is a good one to have. I really enjoyed reading Rick Newcombe's books! Rick come at thing from a high level but we share the same passion for pipes and the hobby.
The other books I go back to are The pipe Smokers Ephemeris Books I&II It takes awhile to get the hang of reading these books but the are pretty much a history of the hobby and packed with pipe knowledge.
Anyone interested, PM me your email and I'll forward you Ben Rapaport's Book Catalog The Nictotian Network & Nexus. He has most everything available including reading lists. Note, a lot of what he deals with is very scholarly. 8O
Almost forgot, Check out Gary's site. I've bought some books from him over the years. http://www.briarbooks.com/

The book to which sablebrush52 refers is Pipes - Artisans and Trademarks by José Manuel Lopes (ISBN: 972-589-153-8). Incidentally, its foreword was written by Mr. Rapaport.

And, J. M. Barrie's book Lady Nicotine. He was the author of Peter pan, and this book on pipes had me laughing out loud.
Here it is for free
Nice one. I have been meaning to get around to reading this for a while but needed reminding. Free download too, it's gone straight on all my mobile devices.
