aloha--i have decided to get a blue riband--i really do not know that much about pipes--i am 70 and have smoked pipes for many years--i like straight grains and there is a blue riband currently on ebay which ends in a few days-how does the guy know it is from the 30's??--i know the market will set the price--but does anybody want to venture a ball park? and finally--how often do pipes of this quality and vintage come up for sale?--mahalo no kokua

It's the football shaped country of make stamp. That was discontinued in the 1930's.

That COM isn't seen very often, Pipedia says it was introduced in the 1920's and then used into the early 1930's, when it morphed into the round (or oval football) "Made In England" COM.

It must be kept in mind that the Blue Riband Pipes were not introduced until late 1938 ~ early 1939. Some more historical information; The Blue Riband was an unofficial accolade given to the passenger liner crossing the Atlantic Ocean in regular service with the record highest speed, and dates to the early 19th Century, with the Cunard White Star Liner, Queen Mary, ultimately posting 30.99 knots (57.39 km/h) 10 – 14 August in 1938.

The last vessel to hold the title was the SS United States, on her maiden voyage in 1952, the United States upped the Blue Riband to 34.51 knots (63.91 km/h). In 1958, the transatlantic airlines put jet transports into service and the days of the record breakers were numbered. Queen Mary retired in 1967, and the United States in 1969. The United States is still berthed in Philadelphia, with ongoing efforts to preserve her, and save her from the scrap yard.
