Does anyone ever blow into the pipe to keep it burning? I do it on a cigar sometimes to heat up the ember. Just curious.

It's part of breath smoking.

Thanks, I figured as much. Not too different than on the cigar. I tend to inhale a little also. Thanks for the link. That is the way I like to smoke.

You got to be careful doing that , you can damage a pipe by stoking a very hot temp in btm, Doc Watson said he"s seen a lot of damage in pipes he was restoreing by folks doing this, Bad habit!

When I saw this post, I thought it referred to blowing through the pipe after it's out and emptied, to clear the

stem and bowl of any debris. I always do that. In smoking a pipe, I never do it. If you want to heat up the fire

just a bit, cover the bowl with with your fingers or a match cover, briefly, to give the fire less air and more fuel.

I'd join those who recommend against blowing through a lit pipe.

Sometimes when i'm losing the battle to a pipe that does not want to stay lite I will blow into it, to try and get it going again without reaching for a match.

I never blow into my pipe. If my pipe starts to go out I will either use my tamper or I will cover the bowl with a couple of fingers and get it going that way.

Like bluesmoke stated, it's part of breath smoking but it is done very gently with a short puff. I don't think this technique will damage your pipe. My pipe always remains quite cool when using this method.

Correct flyguy. It is a very slight breath into the pipe. Not really like blowing. More like "fanning".

I breath naturally when I smoke. and invariably I end up blowing through the pipe a bit. Sometimes I end up with ash on my hand or in my face from this. I don't huff through it; more of a very light exhale.

I only blow in to clear a blockage, never to keep it lit. Cover the bowl with a finger or two to relight a dying pipe.

I do this, however, never (or rarely) directly into the bowl. What I do is on my exhale, I often will hover the stem to the side of my mouth (I am not a clencher).
What this does is push a small trace of air back through the stem. I usually will see smoke then rise out of the bowl and so I know it's hitting the embers. I don't do this on every exhale, but every so often; I feel this helps keep the tobacco burning.

I only ever do it if I'm doing something and have both hands full and it starts goig out. Otherwise I just put my fingers over the top or tamp it.

I'm trying to cut back on blowing into it, I got in the habit early on and now I've got to force myself to quit, since the bowl is getting awfully hot on the bottom.
