Just got an email from P&C for a new blend from Russ Ouellette and it says "It’s been a while since Russ has been able to do a completely new blend, but we figured out a way to make it happen!"

So many questions:

- Does this have to do with deeming regulations? How? Why?
- Why can't they just release a new blend and how does providing two different components that you blend yourself somehow skirt the deeming regulations? Wouldn't the two individual components be subject to the same said regulations?
- Why do we have to get a full 8oz. of this stuff?

I don't know, but it just all seems like a bad idea. Personally, I think SP.com's limited releases are a better approach.

Deeming regulations dealt with finished products not with components. This is a workaround. Other companies are either sending their blends for the SE route, which is less expensive, repackageing older blends under new names, which gets around some of the Deeming BS, or just figuring that, for now, they can get away with it.

As for amounts, they need to move enough to make it worth their time and labor to offer it.

I also feel like SP/laudisi and Sutliff/TP/cupojoes put much more administrative and legal effort behind their company while P&C possibly doesn’t.

Taking the perceived easiest way out of a situation instead of thorough due diligence and paperwork.

I mean, if we're talking workarounds, and since these "blends" come in plastic zip bags anyway, why not say "This blend is unfinished until you mix it in another bag with air (BYOA and BYOB)"?

Looking at this a little differently, it is clear that an impressive variety of blends can be mixed up at home without pressure, stoving, or aging, just by putting together what is available, working out the proportions (recipe) to your taste. Some of my best smokes have always been done that way, to my surprise.

The simplest beginner recipe is a single leaf (or simple) Virginia blend, a similar burley single leaf or blend -- either can be the base, the largest proportion, with a pinch of unflavored black Cavendish. The mixture is usually delicious without much ado. You just have to get it in proportions that taste the best to you.

After that, the possibilities are endless, with dark-fired, Orientals, aromatics as condiments, and so on. You need never want for variety. Deeming schmeeming.

sure but in a kind of bullshit way to be honest. More penny pinching and using the regs as an excuse. I bet there is more behind it then the regs. Saves more labor then it save sthe regs

Speaking of Sutliff, does anyone know we need to be stocking up on the match blends or did they send them through the approval process? I tried asking about this indirectly on the phone with customer service, but they just said they had no plans to discontinue the ones I asked about (match walnut, match field and stream). Looking at tobacco reviews, I couldn't find any reviews that predate 2007, and I have no idea when they were actually introduced.

The P&C BYO nonsense started back in 2020 with Trout Stream. Glad I got a lifetime supply of Angler's Dream before I lost faith in the company.

Is Russ among the ones who decided to follow the regulations or what? Other companies haven't quit making new blends.

Most of them were introduced between 2010 and 2015 based on the dates of the earliest reviews, so they've later than 2007. My guess would be that they've been Deemed since they sell in large enough amounts. But if you're concerned, stock up.
