Newbie here and 1st post. In one of my new pipes that I used a few time the black liner is peeling away at the top of the bowl. I was wondering if this was common or a defect in craftsmanship?

Just curious but does your pipe also have a metal insert in the bottom? I ask as many "tobacco shops" and other sellers or tobacco related paraphernalia often sell whats looks like a traditional tobacco pipe but is nothing more then a cheap knock off that is more suited for "tobacco" (if you get my drift) then real pipe tobacco. These pipe are often lined with various products and contain a metal insert.
As rothnh is suggesting, if you bought a well used real tobacco pipe or have used it sufficiently your self, the cake may be coming off, it that really is the case, just take somewhat dull knife and carefully ream out the pipe to remove all but a thin layer of it.

@ Glenn, The pipe is all wood. @ Rothnh, I did bring the pipe back to the shop where it was purchased, I've been doing business with this place for years and trust them fully. I did show the pipe to the owner and he said that it could have been caused by me being a little ruff with my tamper, he told me that I'm not packing dirt into a beach pail and to be a little more careful.
Thanks Guys.

I hear you St.Pete...I've been dealing with these guys for over 20 years so I feel pretty confident in what I was told, if anyone has any different info I'm always willing to listen.

What it is is just the carbon lining some pipe makers use to protect the pipe during the break in process, whether or really works or not is up for debate and pipes do not need them at all, I would just try to put it back in place with my finger or rip it off and keep puffing away. When that layer comes cracked is when I start to worry. You could always use sandpaper and remove it all from the inside of the pipe, but that is very time consuming. The black carbon layer will eventually burn away, so you shouldn't worry about it too much.
These layers should never come off with a tamper, sounds more like it wasn't applied correctly, which isn't a big problem, more of an aggravation. Unless it was a super expensive pipe, I would just let it go and enjoy smoking it as is, cracks in the wood are really what you should be on the lookout for and just don't puff away on it more than you need to at the start, if it feels too hot to hold, you need to set it down and resume puffing when it cools down a bit. Have fun, welcome to the forums :)
