Black bowl finish?

I was showing an unsmoked to someone and they asked me what the black finish inside the bowl was. It caugh me off guard as I realized, I had no idea. Can someone clue me in?

The bowl coating undoubtedly includes carbon powder - the question is: What else does it include? The second link above describes organic vs. inorganic bowl coatings.

I had always had a hunch it involved ash or coke or something but didn't know. Some certainly seems more organic and some almost looks like an actual finish of some kind. Thanks for the links peck, I'm going to read through them after I smoke a morning bowl.
