Bird feathers?

Pondering how they cleaned their pipe stems in the days of old. Was it with bird feathers? I know I could “google” it but I prefer the human input even though I’m not going to be glued to the internet to get your answers.

Before the invention of today's chenille-type pipe-cleaners, I believe that bird feathers were, indeed, used, although that does not sound very hygienic, nor appetizing!

Ah! Completely forgot about safe drinking water. Table wine, spirits, beer.. I guess they were like me. Rather drinking it then pour into a pipe

Having seen what water can do to a wooden rifle stock, the thought of putting water in a pipe just irks me. I'd just rather swab it out regularly than flush with water.

Well there you go. The feather is sanitized with alcohol. I think I’ll pass lol. Then again I do sleep on a down pillow…….
