Here is another good article in a college newspaper that takes the rarely seen logical and sensible view of smoker's rights and non-smoker's rights.
Interestingly, the paper is named, "Pipe Dreams", but it does not relate to pipe smoking. I do not know why it is named that, but it's cool anyway.

What happened to all those tenured pipe smoking proffesors? If they have tenure and insist on smoking on campus you cant fire them...right?

I have to admit...I didn't much like that article. I mean, the author agreed with restrictions up to a campus-wide ban. Ridiculous.

We got to orgonise a smoke in on campus...I am tired of state colleges that are owned by the people doing stuff like this without a act from the state legislture...

It does try to get the reader to make a decision as to where the line should be drawn.

I just amazes me how much traction the anti's have gained in recent years. Here we are discussing the fine points of restricting second hand smoke as if it's been proven that second hand smoke is harmful. I, for one, would like to see a double-blind, placebo-controlled study that demonstrates that. Until then, I think smoking ought not to be restricted anywhere -- indoors or outdoors.

My own personal opinion is one that I think is reasonable.
The problem is that the antis are not only anti-smoking, they are anti-reason and anti-logic as well.
Putting the whole second hand smoke thing aside, since I know it is a bunch of BS, I still think it is reasonable for an individual to expect to not have to involuntarily smell someone else's tobacco smoke indoors.
However, the forced smoking bans, every single one of them are completely wrong.
Defining a private business as a public place is one of the largest misdeeds.
What would be right and just would be to have some businesses that are 100% smoking allowed, and it is advertised as such and directly communicated that you enter of your own free will and at your own risk.
Next would be to have businesses that have smoking and non-smoking sections, like in the old days, but have them truly separated with walls and doors and ventilation systems.
To me, that makes sense.
The problem is that trying to talk sense to an anti is like trying to get a cat to wear socks.

Btw, there actually used to be some places like I described.
There was a steakhouse I used to go to in Ft. Lauderdale, which is now out of business. This was towards the end of the 90's cigar boom. It was a real classy place with a piano player, fine steaks and a walk-in humidor.
You couldn't smoke at the table, but there was a smoking lounge wear you could have after dinner drinks and desert. To me, that is a perfectly fine way to do it.
