Bill Taylor Pipes

These Peretti Bill Taylors have been up for several months and no one bought one until today. There were 3, now there are 2. My question is... can I expect similar quality in a Bill Taylor Peretti as in an Ashton Bill Taylor? Or did Bill Taylor make several grades of pipes for different vendors? I am so tempted to grab one, but there really are a lot of nice pipes out there now for $125-$150...

My experience with a Bill Taylor Ashton was not good. The pipe was a beautiful Dublin but it smoked wet and the stem was very uncomfortable. I have an older Peretti that has a comfrotable vulcanite stem that I paid 90.00 years ago on ebay. It is labeled Straight Grain and smokes great. I have no idea who made it, but I doubt it was Bill Taylor because of it's age.
I would go with a Peretti that was made by briar works for 125.00 before the Bill Taylor made.

I just found this Peretti Straight Grain on ebay. The seller is well known and has a great reputation. He might let it go for 135-150 I believe.

Bill made a custom Ashton Sovereign lx bent bulldog. It was an amazing pipe and wish I never got rid of it. It is something that can never be replaced. It smoked dry and had a great draw. He was a great guy to chat with and a very sad day when he passed. The last several years he had good days and bad days in the shop. On his good days the pipes were amazing. Would love others experience with Taylor Ashton pipes. I know there is a mod on here that loves his pipes. Hopefully Al will chime in.

I'm surprised they've been hanging around this long... An unsmoked Taylor Ashton would sell quickly and for a lot more; right? That gives me some pause... Should it though? I do like both the shapes.
With the 15% off, they are $148 and $122.50...
It is in my near future plans to own something by Briarworks...

The pear looks like a nice pipe, and it's made by a legend. Of course, Taylor's pipes were always hit and miss. I had one that was drilled "wrong," but it smoked great. Actually, it was drilled the way bent pipes have almost always been drilled (high in the mortise with a large tenon-mortise gap).
It's worth pointing out, too, that the demand for perfectly drilled pipes that are properly "engineered" and "pass a cleaner" is a fairly new thing. There are plenty of good, enjoyable pipes out there that don't have perfect airways. I don't know about the Peretti pipes, but Ashtons were always oil-cured, sturdy and well made, and they just had a certain character about them. That's why Ashton pipes are loved by certain smokers, not because they were always perfectly drilled smoking machines.

The first Ashton I bought (online, without holding in hand first) had a stem that wasn't even vaguely in line with the shank - it looked as though it belonged to an entirely different pipe.
The Jimmy Craig I have, however (only my third Ashton, including that first dud) is rather nice. It's the only one I've hung on to, though I do regret selling that second one.

I'm a fan of Bill Taylor Ashtons. I didn't know he made pipes for Peretti. I don't see a link to any pipes, where are these? I found a couple of unsmoked LJ Peretti pipes on ebay, but there is no reference to Bill Taylor.

Those look like Taylor shapes. An unsmoked Ashton would bring considerably more. I don't know of there is a way to guarantee those were made by Bill Taylor. The rusticated pipe causes me to make that remark. I'm sure Peretti would take a return if a buyer wasn't happy. (Not all Taylor Ashtons are drilled well)
