I just try to use the shape of the block to get the most pipe out of it, I use basic hand tools, files, sandpaper, hand drill, I did the clover with a Dremel, I posted it in BoB on Facebook and it sold in 15 minutes $99.00 so I can buy two more pieces of briar, lol.
I probably had a good 6 hours of solid work, not counting the waiting between dye coats. I started just making pipes I would like to smoke, thick walls and kinda on the large size 6+ " and people started asking for them so now my retirement is spent doing this. I use well aged briar so they are relatively light for their size, but they are more of a porch type smoker, than throw it in your pocket and take it with you. I am very proud of them and honored that people want them, I hope some of them survive to be enjoy'd long after I'm gone. Thanks for the compliments guys, it is appreciated. you can visit irishbriar.com to see my pipes, if you see something you like send me a message and mention Pipesmagazine and I'll see what I can do on the price.
