Title edited for caps and brevity. Please follow Rule 9. (very short read.)

Wood pipes are easily the most commonly used, and for good reason. Wood is widely considered the best material, both in terms of pipe durability and the smoking experience that it provides.

To give my own answer though, I like briar because it is pretty and tastes nice. I like cobs because they are light and cheap and I get a kick out of making a fire in a corn cob. I like Meerschaum for the way it smokes, and the colour change of ageing. I like clay for its history and its neutrality of flavour.
@mortonbriar The same reasons as I like clay pipes; I got interested in clays after seeing re-enactors smoking them.

A specific "wood": Briar. Meerschaum is a fine material. Some prefer it over briar.

In my opinion, these are the two best materials for a pipe, but others exist and have their proponents.

Done. Fini. Fin. Over and out.
